Shigeto Haibara (灰原 重人)
Shigeto Haibara was the head of the Haibara family. He was an important figure in the politics of Rogetsu Isle, and as the Director of Haibara Infirmary, he worked to find a cure for Moonlight Syndrome, driven by the death of his wife and the illness of his daughter. His research included illegal experiments which led to the deaths of several patients. With the help of his son, Shigeto tried to resurrect the ancient Rite of Descent, over which his family had once presided. His daughter performed in the Rite on the night of the lunar eclipse, along with five girls who had been kidnapped to perform as Organs. Shigeto did not come under any suspicion of being connected to the kidnapping, and continued his research as before, until the Day of Tranquility.

Sakuya's Mother
This unnamed woman was Shigeto's wife and Yo and Sakuya's mother. Possessed of a strong sixth sense, she contracted Moonlight Syndrome, and began to lose her memories and have violent outbursts which she could not remember later. Rather than suffer the pain of forgetting everything and hurting her family, she committed suicide by jumping from the roof of Haibara Infirmary. Shigeto dedicated his research to her.

Sakuya Haibara(灰原 朔夜)
Sakuya was Shigeto Haibara's elder child. She inherited a sixth sense from her mother. When she, too, began to suffer from Moonlight Syndrome, she was admitted to Rogetsu Hall. She wanted to be like her mother, kind and gentle, but the disease made her dangerous to others, and she was isolated in a ward constructed specially for her on the fourth floor. In the 1970s, under the influence of her father and younger brother, she performed as Vessel in the Rite of Descent, but when the ritual failed, she fell into a coma and spent the next two years in the basement of Rogetsu Hall. Two years after the ritual, she awoke and began to roam the island, Blooming and spreading the curse to everyone who saw her.

Yo Haibara (灰原 耀)
Yo was Shigeto's younger child. He followed in his father's footsteps and became a doctor, moving his practice to a clinic on the mainland. He performed illegal and sometimes fatal experiments on his patients, and eventually had to return to the island, pursued by the police for three murders. Shigeto allowed Yo to stay in a hidden room in Rogetsu Hall, and the two worked together to resurrect the Rite of Descent. It was Yo who kidnapped the five girls who were to be the Organs, leading them away from the tourist Kagura to the Temple of Tsukiyomi. After the ritual's failure, Yo hoped for the day that Sakuya would wake from her coma and leave the island with him. However, her awakening marked the start of the second Day of Tranquility. Yo went to the roof to watch events unfold, but was pursued there by a detective still investigating him. In the struggle, both men fell from the roof and were killed.

Ayako (亞夜子)
It is hinted throughout the game that Ayako was the child of an incestuous relationship between Yo and Sakuya. She was admitted to Rogetsu Hall with mild symptoms of Getsuyuu Syndrome, and her family name was kept secret from hospital staff. She was close to Yo; her room was connected to the one where he stayed as a fugitive, and he mentioned her often in his diary, even going so far as to consult her about the girls chosen as Kanade. Ayako had a sadistic and destructive personality, bullying another girl in the hospital, tormenting her nurse and dismembering dolls to hang their arms from the ceiling of her room. On the Day of Tranquility, Ayako was in her room and wrote of seeing a man outside Blooming, and the confusion in her head, pleading for help from Yo and her mother.
