Sayaka Minazuki is a character in Fatal Frame IV. She is Ruka Minazuki's mother and a friend of Choshiro Kirishima, and guides them both through the game.
Past
Sayaka was born on an island near Rogetsu Isle.[1] She came from the line of Guardian maidens. Although the Guardian tradition had died out, she took her heritage seriously, and explained it in a letter to Soya Yomotsuki, to whom she was engaged. They married soon afterwards, and lived together in the Yomotsuki Residence on Rogetsu Isle. They had one daughter, Ruka.

Sayaka was a traditional woman who passionately wanted to be a good wife and mother, and made sure that the three of them spent time together as a family during Ruka's childhood. She taught Ruka to play the piano, and passed on to her the melody that the Guardians held most sacred. She and Soya were also friends with the important Haibara Family.
As time went on, Soya began to become obsessed with his work, and spent more and more time confined in his workroom without telling Sayaka what he was doing. Meanwhile, Ruka was beginning to show symptoms of Moonlight Syndrome. Sayaka tried her best to keep the family together, but when she discovered that Soya had been putting masks on Ruka that could have triggered her illness, she had Ruka hospitalised at Rogetsu Hall.[2]
On the night of the eclipse, Ruka and four other girls were kidnapped. Sayaka went to a detective who was searching for Yo Haibara, and asked him to find her daughter. Two weeks later, Ruka and the others were found in an underground cavern, connected to the basement of Haibara Infirmary. Sayaka realised who must have been responsible for the kidnapping, and blamed herself for putting Ruka in harm's way.[3] Eventually, anxious for her daughter's health and unable to convince Soya to abandon his obsession, Sayaka left Rogetsu Isle and took Ruka with her. Knowing that it would be dangerous for Ruka to regain her memories, she decided to turn her back on the past, and focus on building good memories in future.
Fatal Frame IV
Flashbacks show that Sayaka's health deteriorated, leaving her bedridden. She warns Ruka to stay away from the island, but when two of the girls who were kidnapped die mysteriously, Ruka returns there to regain her lost memories. Again, Sayaka turns to Choshiro Kirishima for help, and gives him a special flashlight (invented by Dr. Kunihiko Asou) that can damage ghosts. It is unknown how or where she obtained this.
As Ruka and Choshiro explore, they see Sayaka around the island, in visions and flashbacks. She helps Ruka remember her childhood and how their family came to break down, reminds her of the Moonsong, and helps her reach the Lunar Odeum and perform the ritual to calm the moon.
It is revealed that Sayaka has in fact passed away and it is her ghost that is aiding both Ruka and Choshiro through the island. She shows Choshiro the truth: that he has been dead for eight years.
Misc. Info
- There is a Spirit Stone Radio in Sayaka's room, albeit a seemingly broken one; like the flashlight, it is unknown how she obtained this.
- The Fatal Frame IV Japanese website erroneously states that Sayaka's maiden name was "Yomotsuki". In fact, "Yomotsuki" was her married name, and "Minazuki" was her maiden name,[4] which she and Ruka used after they left the island.
