Save points are an important feature in the first four games of the series, as they are used to create and edit save files, as well as for saving pictures taken into albums. In Fatal Frame V, save points are removed in favour of automatic saving at checkpoints.

The save points in the first game are a plain camera mounted onto a stand. This camera glows blue most of the time but will change to red and be unusable if a spirit is nearby. On the Final Night in the Xbox version, in Fatal difficulty, the player is not allowed to save their game.[1]

In the second game and the remake for Wii, the save point is a square lantern, with red butterflies on each side. The lantern will go out and be unusable if there is a vanishing ghost or hostile spirit nearby.

In the third game, the save points are blue lanterns with a blue flame design on each side. The lantern will go out and be unusable if there is a vanishing ghost or hostile spirit nearby.

The Camera Obscura on Rei Kurosawa's desk also serves as a secondary save point when she is awake in the real world.

In Fatal Frame IV (both original and remaster), the save points are large yellow lanterns that give off a faint glow. As in other games, the lanterns can only be used when lit, and the light will go out when a spirit is nearby. During the game, players may use the lantern's exchange/shop (交換) to purchase items (such as herbal medicine or film) using accumulated points. It is also possible for the player to save their game at any time by accessing the menu and selecting the save option.

In the remaster, the game will autosave whenever the player walks close enough to one of the lanterns, without having to enter the menu. The shop is still available, with a new Hozuki Doll guide list. You can also change the current character's costume at a save lantern.

In the remake of crimson butterfly, the save lanterns from Fatal Frame II have been redesigned. As in the remaster of Fatal Frame IV, you can also access the item shop and costume menu via the save lanterns.
