Haunted House Mode
Haunted House Mode is a game mode in Fatal Frame: Deep Crimson Butterfly. It is unrelated to the main story, and features short on-rails missions in which the player must move along a predetermined path while completing tasks, such as spotting hidden dolls. Its guide is a white-haired shrine maiden called Kureha, who will give the player their results in the form of a report on their sixth sense when each level is cleared.
Initially there are three game modes: "don't get scared", "search for the doll" and "spiritual photography". Players explore the Lost House, which features environments from Tachibana House, Osaka House and Fatal Frame IV's Haibara Infirmary, and ghosts from throughout the series will pop out, trying to scare them. The stronger the player's reaction the more "scare points" they will incur, increasing their fear meter. Haunted House Mode can be played with another player, the first 2-player mode in the series, if a second Wii remote is connected. The second player can trigger events such as ghosts or ghostly voices playing through the other person's Wii remote.
- Don't Get Scared
The player must make it to the designated goal before their fear meter reaches level 3.
- Search for the Doll
The player must explore the house and find the hidden Hōzuki Dolls five times to clear, while staying ahead of the ghost chasing the player.
- Spiritual Photography
The player must find the designated vanishing ghost and photograph it five times.
Make Request to Lady Kureha
When the above three modes are completed, a second set of haunted houses are unlocked. These can be saved upon completion to the Haunted House Selection to replay again whenever you wish.

Leave it all to Lady Kureha. She'll select the rules, the ghosts, and more, so it's different each time you play.
Spirit Level
Reach the goal to receive an assessment based on your reactions of your sensitivity to the spirit world.
Don't be afraid
If your heart level reaches Level 3 (Ordinary Heart), you will fail the challenge.
Swift Exit if Shocked
Reach your goal without giving in to terror. If your Fear Meter fills up, you will fail the challenge.
The Blindfolded Spirit
With a blindfolded spirit trying to feel its way towards you, aim to stay out of its reach and collect the dolls.
Shadowed by Ayako
The cruel spirit Ayako is coming for you. Evade her and collect the dolls.
Day of Repentance
Stay out of reach of the ghost of the Kusabi on your trail and collect the dolls.
The Possessed Doll
Azami, the possessed doll, is getting closer. Stay out of her reach and collect the dolls.
The Bell's Chime
The weeping spirit of the young girl, Chitose, is on your trail. Stay out of her reach and collect the dolls.
The Laughter of Sae
Sae's chilling laughter echoes through the house as she pursues you. Stay out of her reach and collect the dolls.
A Malevolent Mayu
Mayu is right behind you, so stay out of her clutches and collect the dolls.
Photograph the Girl in Red
There's a girl in red playing hide-and-seek in this house. Can you capture her on film?
Photograph the Nurse
Take aim at the ghost of the nurse in white and try to photograph her.
Capture 5 Types of Ghost
In this house, your goal is to snap photographs of five different types of ghost.
Photograph Mio and Mayu
Your goal is to snap a photograph of the twins, Mayu and Mio, when they appear.
Photograph Sae
The blood-soaked spirit of Sae laughs chillingly as you try to photograph her.
Where The Girls Dwell
This house is haunted by the ghostly girls, Chitose and Ayako. One of them will be in pursuit.
Among Female Spirits
Only the ghosts of women and girls haunt this house. Photograph five different types of ghosts.
Time of the Twins
You'll encounter Mio and Mayu in a variety of outfits, along with the spirits of the twin shrine maidens.
