Kageri Sendou is a ghost in Fatal Frame: Mask of the Lunar Eclipse. In life, she suffered from Moonlight Syndrome and was a patient at Rogetsu Hall. As a member of the important Sendou family, Kageri's treatment was administered by her own family doctor, and staff at Rogetsu Hall were warned not to interfere. Her room is decorated in a funereal manner, showing her fixation on death.
Background
Many Moonlight Syndrome patients would become fixated on certain objects or people as anchors for their sense of self, and it appears that Kageri's obsession centred on her elder twin sister, Kaoru. Kageri believed that she had been born dead, while Kaoru was alive, and so for them to be together, Kaoru had to die and attain the same half-life that Kageri was living.[1] Kaoru initially accepted Kageri's wishes, even when Kageri pushed Kaoru and rendered her unable to walk, but in time she came to believe that her acquiescence had made things worse, and committed suicide.[2]
Afterwards, Kageri made a doll in her likeness, whom she called Watashi or "Me". She watched over the doll with single-minded devotion, pushing her around the sanatorium in a red wheelchair. When she believed Watashi was lonely, she offered to make her similar "friends",[3] and appears to have killed at least one fellow patient at Rogetsu Hall to make her into a friend for Watashi.[4]
On the Day of Tranquility, Kageri witnessed Sakuya Haibara emerging into the courtyard, causing everyone who saw her to blossom. Kageri apparently did not succumb immediately. Instead, the catastrophe made her feel elation for the first time, and she hoped to take the opportunity to go for a longer walk than usual with Watashi, perhaps as far as the beach.[5]
Fatal Frame IV
As a ghost, Kageri continues to take Watashi on walks to the courtyard at Rogetsu Hall, and this is how Ruka first encounters her in Phase IV:. In the courtyard, Kageri attacks when Ruka reaches out to touch Watashi. Later on, she can be seen standing over the coffin that serves as the centrepiece of in her room. Her last appearance is during Choshiro Kirishima's final chapter. In the Gallery, after Choshiro noticed Watashi's empty wheelchair, he attempted to pass it by, but Kageri appeared behind the wheelchair before attacking him.
Misc Info
- She wears a black dress and a black veiled hat, similar to Western mourning dress.
- Kageri's room is #311 "Waxing Moon" (神帰月, Kamikizuki, "month the gods reuturn").
- Kageri's relationship with Watashi is similar to the relationship between Akane Kiryu from Fatal Frame II and her doll, also created to replace a dead twin.
- Her spirit list entry notes that Kageri is her family's secret shame.[6]
- Kageri's room is decorated with photographs, possibly taken by Kageri herself.
- Kageri was based on a figure called Miyamoto who often appears in Makoto Shibata's dreams. According to Shibata, "Miyamoto walks around with a bandaged person in his wheelchair, and the bandaged person smells dead already and insects are crawling all over [them]. Sometimes, only the wheelchair and the bandaged person are left alone, and when I try to touch the bandaged person, Miyamoto yells at me not to touch [them]."[7]
