The Moonbeam Cave is an underground cavern on Rogetsu Isle. It is situated below Haibara Infirmary. The cavern was used in the rituals of the island; it contains a shrine, and a grand door connects it to the Rougetsu Tunnels.
The name of this cave is related to the natural illumination coming in through the well on the grounds of Haibara Infirmary, known as the Moonbeam Well (月映ノ井戸). During the full moon, the well was said to fill up with light, and become a reservoir for the spirits.[1] Those who had lost their memories entirely and become empty shells were sent to the Moonbeam Well to bask in the moonlight, but although this treatment stabilised their condition, [2] it was not expected to restore their memories or sense of self.
After the Kiraigou failed, the five girls who had been performing as Kanade were brought to the Moonbeam Well, where their condition was observed closely by Shigeto Haibara. A doctor at the hospital, Shouji Katagiri, heard their voices from underground and tipped off the police, and the girls were discovered by Choshiro Kirishima two weeks after their initial disappearance.
During Fatal Frame IV, both Ruka and Misaki have fragmented memories of their time in the Moonbeam Well, and Ruka reacts particularly strongly upon her return, saying she feels as though she's been there forever. Choshiro also has several flashbacks to the moment when he discovered the girls and thought he saw their faces change. This series of flashbacks culminates in Chapter 10, when he finds Ruka in the cavern and gives her a piece of the mask.
