The Tsukimori Shrine Maidens are a group of shrine maidens and folk healers mentioned in Fatal Frame IV, who traditionally played a role in Rogetsu Isle's Rite of Descent ritual. Originally it was their duty to select suitable Kanade before the lunar eclipse and oversee preparation for the ritual. If the ritual were to fail and Blooming occurred, the maidens would ascend to the Gesshou Shrine at the top of the Tsukuyomi Peninsula Lighthouse and play the Tsukimori Song to calm the moon and protect the islanders from its resonance. This song was passed down orally, along with a mirror, which would reveal the music at a time when nobody living remembered it.
The Tsukimori Maidens were all psychic mediums who could sense people's Lunar Melody. According to Dr. Kunihiko Asou, who attended the Kiraigou in the presence of a Tsukimori Shrine Maiden, they possessed "a rich intellect, gentleness, and beauty", but they also had a reputation for being withdrawn from normal society.
Before the 1970s, the Tsukimori tradition had died out, but Sayaka Minazuki nevertheless taught the song to her daughter, Ruka.

Misc. Info
- While Madoka Tsukimori's surname does not use the same kanji as the Tsukimori Maidens, her mother reassured her that the moon will protect her during her illness. It may be possible that they were somehow related to the Tsukimori Maidens.
