Rogetsu Isle is honeycombed with underground tunnels, connecting various places on the island. The tunnels had great religious significance; certain important rituals were carried out in them; the river flowing there was named after the Sanzu River in the Underworld; and there are several altars and Buddha statues to be found there. It was in these tunnels that the Utsuwa would purify herself in preparation for the Kiraigou, and the Kanade would practise their instruments for one hundred nights.[1] In the event of the ritual failing, the "empty shells" of the performers would be taken to the Moonbeam Well to be healed by the moonlight.[2] Legend had it that when the Day Without Suffering came, the only survivors would be those who fled to the tunnels. However, it appears that on the actual the Day Without Suffering, this did not turn out to be true.[3]
