Yuri Kozukata is the main character in Fatal Frame V. She is a psychic who has the ability to read an item's secrets by touching it. She lives and works in an antiques shop owned by Hisoka Kurosawa, and uses her gift to bring back people who have been spirited away. Fuyuhi Himino asks her to go to Mount Hikami, a mountain visited by those who have chosen death, to find a missing person, and Hisoka also disappears there. Yuri and Hisoka have known author Ren Hojo, another of the main characters, for a long time.
Past
When Yuri was younger, she was the sole survivor of an accident that killed her family. As a result, she was left with the ability to see ghosts. She visited a doctor, who proclaimed her cured, but the visions soon returned. Yuri tried to kill herself by jumping off a cliff, but at the last minute, she was rescued by Hisoka. The two became close, and Yuri went to live with her in Kurosawa Antiques. Yuri is still hesitant in her interactions with other people, distanced from them by her abilities.
Fatal Frame V
In the first chapter, Hisoka and Yuri go to Mikomori Hot Springs to look for a book of post-mortem photos that Ren is interested in, and Hisoka instructs Yuri how to use the Camera Obscura and her psychic abilities to find it. They retrieve the album, but as they are leaving, Yuri is attacked by a ghost and has to fend it off using the Camera Obscura. She is left deeply shaken, and Hisoka apologises for bringing Yuri with her.
Soon after, Hisoka goes to the mountain, leaving Yuri in charge of the shop. One evening she has a visitor, Fuyuhi Himino, who says she has requested Hisoka's help to find a missing person. When Yuri says Hisoka is away, Fuyuhi decides to go to the mountain alone, and Yuri feels she has no choice but to go after her. She finds Hisoka's Camera Obscura floating in the water, and uses it to battle ghosts while she is looking for Fuyuhi. She eventually finds her in the forest near the Shrine of Dolls, claiming that Haruka is nearby.
As they are leaving the mountain together, Yuri spots something of Hisoka's in the river. When she picks it up, she has a vision of Hisoka walking in a lake in the fog. As Hisoka looks into the water, a ghost lunges at her and pulls her under, and Hisoka's camera floats downstream.
While Yuri is distracted, Fuyuhi falls under the influence of a ghost and kills herself. Yuri has to fend off her hostile spirit, and after witnessing the dead bodies of many Maidens of Black Water falling from the waterfall into Pool of Purification, flees the mountain altogether.
In spite of her failure to save Fuyuhi, Yuri looks through Hisoka's missing person files and discovers a token for Haruka Momose. She returns to the Shrine of Dolls, and finds Haruka in a black box in the Womb Cavern. This time they make it safely back to the shop, and Ren and Rui promise to be around as much as possible while Hisoka is missing. Haruka thanks Yuri for saving her, but still appears dazed, and believes that she can hear Fuyuhi singing from somewhere nearby. During the night, she slips away again, lured back to the mountain by Fuyuhi's spirit.
Yuri is still determined to save Hisoka and any others she can find. Next, she goes looking for Miu Hinasaki, and finds her at the Shrine of the Ephemeral. When they return to the shop, Yuri attempts to learn more about Miu by touching her, but is surprised when Miu quickly realises what is happening and turns the ability back on Yuri, viewing Yuri's memories of the accident in which she lost her family, and the supernatural experiences that frightened her so badly afterwards.
Yuri continues in her efforts to find Hisoka. She makes it as far as the Lake of the Departed, but when she wades out into the water after Hisoka's image, a thick fog covers the whole area, and Ose Kurosawa, a powerful cursed spirit, appears and forces Yuri to flee.
That night the mountain rumbles, and strange phenomena begin to manifest in the shop. Yuri herself is spirited away, and it is up to Miu to save her. Miu finds Yuri walking out into the waters of the lake once more, and rouses her from her trance. The incident stirs strong memories in both of them: Miu is reminded of her feelings when her mother left her, and Yuri remembers the moment when Hisoka prevented her from committing suicide. Again Ose appears and pursues them, impeding their progress and convincing Yuri that she must look for another way to reach Hisoka. As they are returning home on the cable car, Miu and Yuri begin to bond with each other. Miu explains that she has been able to see the supernatural all her life, and Yuri remarks that although Miu might not be afraid of ghosts, she is afraid of being left alone.
Eventually, Yuri makes her way to the Shrine on the Water, a place accessible only by boat from the Shrine of the Ephemeral. There, she finds Hisoka entombed in a black box. Hisoka tries to convince Yuri to leave her there as a sacrifice, and becomes possessed by the spirit of a shrine maiden, but Yuri saves her, and glances Hisoka's memories and learns of her guilt over a girl she couldn't rescue years before. The two return to Kurosawa's Antiques, where Yuri makes Hisoka a cup of coffee, in a scene echoing the aftermath of Yuri's own suicide attempt.
Even though Hisoka has been rescued, Yuri still feels something is calling her back to the mountain. The next day, she returns to the Shrine on the Water and goes through a door she couldn't investigate with Hisoka. She finds herself standing in the Shadowspring, the border to the other world. There, Ose Kurosawa is waiting for her, and the final battle commences.
Yuri's Fate
Bad Ending
If Yuri Glances Ose in her underwater phase, she sees a vision of Ose's last moments, and is reminded of her own mindset at the time of her suicide attempt. "I am alone," she thinks, and Ose answers, "You are not alone." Standing at the edge of the cliff, she opens her arms. Yuri falls into her embrace, and to her death, before Hisoka can pull her back. She and Ose sink beneath the water, and Ose's lonely spirit is pacified.
Good Ending
If Yuri Glances Ose in her above-water phase, she will again see a vision of Ose's last moments. However, this time Yuri's sobs mingle with Ose's, and when the vision ends she is embracing her and crying in sympathy for Ose's pain. As they weep together, Ose's tainted form is purified, and she regains her former beautiful appearance. She withdraws into her casket, taking the black water with her. When it is gone, Yuri finds herself standing in the Lake of the Departed in full daylight, with Hisoka waiting nearby.
