The Umbral Mound is a new explorable location added in Fatal Frame II: Crimson Butterfly Remake. It is a stone burial mound bound with ropes, surrounded by dense bamboo thickets. In a cutscene early in the game, Seijiro Makabe is shown testing the Camera Obscura by the mound, but it was not an explorable location in the original Fatal Frame II or Deep Crimson Butterfly.
Hidden away behind Minakami Cemetery, far from the main village, and guarded by Mourners who acted as gravekeepers, the Umbral Mound was the place where severed body parts of Kusabi were interred and their spirits enshrined. The cairn was tightly bound with ropes to seal away the powerful resentment within.[1][2] The location was closely guarded, and in the remake, the final family crest was kept there as an extra measure of security against twins using the mechanism in the Old Tree to escape.[3] When Mio first arrives in the area, she finds the cairn collapsed and the stones scattered, and must restore them to their former state using the Exposure Filter.
