Ukishima

Ukishima (浮島, Floating Island) is a new explorable location in Fatal Frame II: Crimson Butterfly. It is a small island in Resonance Pond to the east of Whisper Bridge. It is inaccessible at the beginning of the game, but after unlocking the Exposure Filter you can restore the collapsed bridge and cross over from the shore.
Ukishima seems to have been a popular play spot for the children of the village. Yae Kurosawa mentions playing there with Sae when they were younger,[1] and a few bamboo-leaf boats (a simple traditional child's toy) can be seen still floating in the deep pool beside the island, along with some paper balls scattered near the Twin Deities Statue, and piles of stones. Before making their escape, Yae and Sae visited the island one last time together, reflecting on their future and what they were leaving behind.[2]
Many years after the Repentance, Sunken Woman was spirited away and found her way to Ukishima, where she had the idea to let the river's current carry her out of the village. She entered the water, but was dragged under by ghostly hands and drowned.

Misc. Info
- Although Ukishima was only fully realised in the 2026 remake, Fatal Frame Makoto Shibata had wished to include an island on Resonance Pond since the original Fatal Frame II, but at the time it was impossible due to graphical limitations. The island was included in Deep Crimson Butterfly but could only be seen from afar.[3]
- The piles of stones on the shore are reminiscent of the sai no kawara in Japanese legend, the riverbank in the underworld, where the spirits of deceased children stack up stones in an attempt to build up enough good karma to cross over into the afterlife.
