Altar Twins are male twins who perform the Crimson Sacrifice Ritual of Minakami Village.[1] In Fatal Frame: Deep Crimson Butterfly, they are called twin wardens. Other than the name, there is no difference between Altar Twins and Twin Shrine Maidens; they perform the ritual in the same way, and the surviving twin becomes a Remaining afterwards, while the sacrifice is enshrined in the Old Tree, [2] and becomes a crimson butterfly if the ritual is successful.
Both terms are pronounced futago miko in Japanese, but the "miko" in Twin Shrine Maidens is written 巫女 (medium + woman, the same as miko), whereas in the case of Altar Twins it is written 御子 (divine + child).
