A folklorist is one who studies the folklore and culture of a society. Folklore usually involves tales, beliefs, customs, and normal ways of life. Similar to an anthropologist, folklorists usually focus on the stories and creative works of a culture through their actions, customs, and oral history.
In the Meiji Period (1868-1912), there was a folklore boom in Japan. Folklorists roamed the countryside collecting folktales and songs in an effort preserve an oral tradition that was fast disappearing. The Fatal Frame Series features a number of folklorist characters from both the Meiji Period and modern times.
