How does a place become famed for suicide?
As more people die, the place will gain a reputation, and people are drawn to these spots out of a desire not to be alone in the end.
Interestingly, these suicide spots are rarely known as hotspots for spiritual activity.
This is what makes Mt. Hikami different from the others.
It has both a tradition of suicide, and has long been associated with ghost sightings.
Then, there are the so-called "Maidens of Black Water".
It's said that if you are found by one of those maidens, they will lead you to your death. Those caught in the maidens' gaze never again leave the mountain, or so the rumours go.
There are also tales of specters on Mt. Hikami who relive their own deaths. Those who do not die in accordance with local practices become trapped, forced to relive their final moments for eternity.
Many of the people who have been kept from committing suicide on Mt. Hikami claim to have seen a maiden, or one of these looping specters, and felt a strong compulsion to kill themselves.
Perhaps it is because of these stories of maidens and ghosts that the mountain continues to be a popular spot for those looking to take their own life.

自殺の名所とは、単に「自殺しやすい
地形」というだけでは成立しない。
その地に積み重なった死の量により、
「死に場所としての信頼」を獲得し、
「一人ではない」と思える場所となる
ことで、自殺の名所へと「育つ」のだ。
そこに、「心霊スポット」としての要素
は少なく、霊の目撃はほとんど無い。
「自殺の名所」として有名な日上山には、
他の自殺の名所と違う特徴がある。
「自殺」にまつわる伝承と、霊の存在
である。
日上山には「濡鴉ノ巫女」という伝承
が伝わっている。
山に住む「濡鴉ノ巫女」に見つかると、
死に魅入られて自殺してしまうといわれ、
山で巫女に見られたら、二度と山を出ら
れないと伝えられている。
また日上山には「死を繰り返す亡者」と
いう伝承もある。山で正しく死ぬことが
できなかった者は、死の瞬間を繰り返す
亡者となる、というものだ。
実際に日上山で命を取りとめた者の多くが、
巫女を見た、或いは自殺者を見たと証言し、
その後、皆「見たと言う者と同じ方法で」
自殺してしまうのだと言う。
巫女により引き起こされた死は連鎖し、
日上山は今日も自殺の名所として、
育ち続けているのかもしれない。
