The custom of marrying the dead is seen elsewhere too, but the "Ghost Marriage" of Mt. Hikami was unique.
Rather than being done to mourn the dead, the Ghost Marriage seems to have been part of a ritual in which shrine maidens were sacrificed.
Similar traditions join the dead with an imaginary spouse depicted in votive pictures.
However, on Mt. Hikami it seems living men were brought in to be bound to the maidens.
Once on the mountain, the men were not allowed to leave.
The Ghost Marriage brought in "Outsiders" to soothe the soul of the shrine maiden, and to strengthen the Pillar she had become.
Unable to leave the mountain, the shrine maidens would wait for a man to come and die with them.

死後に行われる結婚という風習は他の
国にも見られるが、日上山にも「幽婚」と
呼ばれる儀式があったと伝えられている。
冥婚、死後婚と呼ばれるこれらの風習は、
未婚の死者への弔いとして行われる。
日上山に伝わる幽婚は、人柱となった
巫女たちに、男をめあわせるものだった
ようだ。
日本の他の地方に伝わる同じような風習
では、死者に架空の伴侶をめあわせ、
その姿を絵馬に描いて奉納する。
しかし、日上山では巫女に対して生きた
男性を招きいれ、めあわせていたようだ。
一度招き入れられた男は、山の掟に従い
生きて山を降りることはできない。
つまり、幽婚は柱となった巫女の魂を慰める
ためにマレビトを招きいれ、共に柱とする儀式
だったのではないだろうか。
巫女は山を降りることを許されず、柱となり、
心中する相手が来るのを待っているのだ。
