Oral tradition tells us of the "Shrine on the Water."
It is said to be the source of life, and home to the sun god.
People summoned by the cry of the mountain are said to pass through the shrine on their way to the gods.
There are claims of people offering up their thoughts and their souls to release them from their suffering.
The shrine appears in several folktales, but unfortunately no trace of the building itself has ever been found.
The question is, where is this shrine located? Could it lie on top of a literal body of water, as the name suggests?
The Lake of the Departed on the summit is always covered in mist.
The silhouette of a torii gate can be seen when the sun sets.
If that is the Shrine on the Water, it is likely that only certain individuals - those granted special permission - were allowed to approach it via boat.

日上山に伝わる口伝に、「水上ノ宮」と
呼ばれる場所が伝えられている。
曰く、そこは全ての源であり、陽の神が
眠りにつく場所である。
また、山鳴りに呼ばれた人々は、水上ノ宮
を通って神のもとへ旅立つのだという。
他にも、人々の想いや魂をそこに納める
ことで、苦しみから解放されると伝えられて
いる場合もある。
複数の伝承が、重要な場所であると表現
している水上ノ宮だが、それがあるとされる
山頂には、残念ながら、建物やその痕跡は
発見できていない。
「水上」という名前から、この山の御神体
とされる「水」の上流、水源に近い場所に
あったと思われる。
山頂にある「彼岸湖」には、一年を通して
深い霧が立ち込めている。
ごく稀に、山の頂きに陽が落ちるその時、
霧の奥に大きな鳥居の影が見えるという。
もし、その場所が「水上ノ宮」であるなら、
おそらく、限られた者たちだけが、舟により
近づくことが許されたのだろう。
