Similar to Blooming in Fatal Frame 4, ghosts in Deep Crimson Butterfly may enter a "berserk mode" when defeated, allowing them to use new attacks, move faster, and increase the chances of a one hit kill. Though there are scripted DRs throughout the game, they are mostly triggered at random. Photographing a spirit during these periods changes their portrait on the Spirit List to include the purple mist associated with Dark Returns.
