Kirie's Lover is a character from Fatal Frame.
He was a young man from an unknown village who was staying at Himuro Mansion as a guest in 1837. He first saw Kirie watching him from a window as he walked in the garden; he was surprised to see her, since no one had ever mentioned her during his stay.
Later, he and Kirie met by chance in the Cherry Atrium, and spent some time walking together in the gardens. After he was unable to learn more about her from the servants, he decided to visit her in her room, and they had several long conversations. He told her about the outside world, which Kirie had never seen and was eager to learn about.
As they spent more time together and began to grow closer, the Himuro family priests tried to intervene and prevent them from meeting. Eventually they told the guest that Kirie had fallen ill and couldn't have visitors, and turned him away from her door with veiled threats, but it only increased his determination to see her again. When he tried to sneak into her room one more time, the Himuro Family Master ordered the priests to kill him, which they did with some remorse. They threw his body into the Abyss, and told Kirie he had gone home.
After his death, the guest appeared to Kirie in a dream, gazing at her sadly, and Kirie realised the truth. Her lingering feelings for him made her an unsuitable Rope Shrine Maiden and her ritual failed, causing the Calamity. Later, Mafuyu Hinasaki's strong resemblance to her lover reached Kirie even in her corrupted state, and she let him live, hoping to keep him by her side.
Alternate Ending
In the Xbox ending of Fatal Frame, after Mafuyu and Miku escape the mansion, Kirie's Lover appears with her in the cavern, and the two embrace. This ending is not considered the true ending for the first Fatal Frame game.
Misc. Info
- Despite his importance to the plot, Kirie's Lover remains a mysterious character - his name, family and even the reason for his visit to Himuro Mansion are all unknown. Although he bears a strong resemblance to Mafuyu, there is no evidence he is in any way related to the Hinasaki, Munakata, or Kurosawa families.
- Kirie's Lover's perspective is recorded in a game note exclusive to the Xbox edition of Fatal Frame.
- While the correlation chart connects the Himuro Family Master to Kirie's Love with an arrow that says "murder", in-game notes show he only gave the order, and did not do the killing himself.
