Even before the landslide, there were always strange goings-on around here.
Some years ago, two girls went missing on a college field trip. The police were stumped. A few days later, one of the girls turned up again, seemingly out of her mind.
There were lots of theories, but most people believed they were simply "spirited away". That girl came back each year to look for her friend, like some sort of pilgrimage.
Countless people have gone missing here over the years. We're all used to it by now.
My father was "spirited away" too. As was the folklorist, Keiji Watarai.
Next it'll be my turn, I bet. I'll vanish with the rest of them.
I doubt anyone will think to come looking for me.

地滑り以前から、おかしなことはあった。
何年か前、遠足に来ていた学生のうち、
二人の娘が山で行方知れずになった。
警察を呼び捜索を依頼したが、結局
見つからずには打ち切られた。
ところが数日後、一人の娘だけが、正気を
なくしたような状態で発見された。
事件性も含めて色々噂されたが、結局
世間的には「神隠し」とされてしまった。
残されたその娘だけは、毎年同じ時期に
なると、参拝するように探しに訪れる。
この山では毎年不自然なくらい多くの
行方不明者が出ていた。
警察も、私も、慣れてきてしまっていた。
先代の父も、その友人だった民俗学者も、
神隠しに遭ったのだから。
次は私の番だ。私はここで消える。
誰も探す人などいないだろう。
