After a long and exhausting fight with the Kusabi, Mio heads to the Abyss. Panicked priests fleeing the Repentance rush past her, and when she finally enters the great cavern, she finds Mayu sitting alone. Mayu tells her that she is too late: the Abyss is rumbling, the Repentance is coming again, and if only Mio had run away by herself she could've been saved. Mio tells Mayu that she just wants to be by her side, and will stay with her until the end. The forms of Yae and Sae overlap with Mio and Mayu during this scene.
As the darkness erupts from the Abyss, Mio and Mayu remember the festival they attended as children, although in their vision they are their current age. This time Mayu catches up to Mio instead of losing her in the crowd. Hand in hand, they watch lanterns float into the sky, and Mio wishes that the day could last forever.
Back in the village, Itsuki is seen with a butterfly fluttering around his hand. Darkness passes across the barred window of his cell, covering the village as the Repentance occurs once more. Beside the Abyss, Mayu puts her arm around Mio and holds her close.
Afterwards, the twins are seen sitting together under a kimono in the Sacrificial Altar, their eyes closed, holding hands.
