Chapter 8: The Waning Moon

Mio and Mayu escape the Tachibana House via the Kiryu House. Mayu wishes to go and see Itsuki one last time. When she and Mio go to the Storehouse, they learn the truth: that Itsuki was a ghost, and that he hanged himself before the ritual. Mayu breaks down in tears. Inside the cell, Mio finds a map of the village, marking the locations of the four pinwheel crests they need to escape. One is hidden in the Storehouse, and the rest are scattered around the village.
She and Mayu make it to the Decayed Tree, where Mayu collapses, exhausted. Mio goes alone to find the other three pinwheel crests in the Osaka House, the Kiryu House and the Tsuchihara grave in the Minakami Cemetery, and returns to the Old Tree. When the puzzle is completed, the door in the Kureha Shrine opens, revealing the path out of the village. Mio wakes Mayu with a promise that they'll soon be home.

Extra
Several alterations have been made to Chapter 8 since Fatal Frame II. Mayu now follows the player around until she is dropped off at the Old Tree, and four new scenes can be viewed if the player takes her to:
- The Storehouse
- Heaven Bridge
- Projector Room in Kiryu House
- Whisper Bridge
These can be done in any order. Viewing all four will affect the player's final ending (for further details, see Deep Crimson Butterfly Endings). After Mayu is left at the Old Tree they cannot be triggered, and all must be seen in one playthrough to affect the ending.
