Having sat abandoned for many years, the Shrine of Dolls has now undergone a significant reconstruction.
In the past, local legends tell that the shrine used so-called "effigies" as offerings. These effigies are likely the old dolls that were found inside.
The road to the shrine was improved, and so the number of visitors gradually increased. There was no end to the visitors bringing their own dolls to add to those left outside.
Assuming this practice to be harmless, no effort has been made to prevent it.
As we were repairing the old dolls, we learned that each of them is engraved with a name.
We also found tiny teeth, bones, and small bundles of hair tucked away inside.
Were these mere keepsakes, or perhaps something more?
The purpose of the shrine has since become clear.
It appears these dolls were believed to contain the souls of deceased children and were likely offered to the shrine as some kind of ritual.
We also learned of a cave below the shrine. Known as the Womb Cavern, it housed several human remains.
Perhaps initially, it was not dolls offered up at the shrine, but people. It seems the cavern may be where the bodies were disposed.
We are considering renovating the cavern into storage space, placing the bones into dolls of their own and holding a joint memorial service for them all.

無人となっていた形代神社を継ぎ、復興
するにあたり縁起を探したが、見つから
なかった。名前から山頂の大禍境にある
「形代奥社」の分社であろう。
付近に残る伝承などから「ヒトガタミ」を
納める神社であるということがわかった。
「ヒトガタミ」とは、おそらく神社内にあった
古い人形たちのことだろう。
参道が整備されたこともあり、徐々に参拝客
が訪れるようになった。
古い人形を陰干しのために濡縁に並べた
ところ、同じように人形を納めて行く人が
後を絶たない。
断るわけにも行かず、悪いことでは無いと
思われるため、このまま受け入れていく。
古い人形たちを修理していて分かった。
この神社に納められていた古い人形には、
それぞれに名前が刻まれている。
また、人形のいろいろな部分に隠される
ように小さな歯や、骨、小さく束ねた髪の毛
などが収められている。
これらは、子供たちの、形見や寄り代として
の人形なのではないだろうか。
かつてのこの神社は、亡くなった子供の
魂を、人形に込めて納める神社だった
のかもしれない。
神社の地下に大きな空洞があることが
わかった。胎内洞窟と呼ばれる洞窟に
繋がっている部分であるが、その中に
大量の人の骨が沈められていた。
この神社は、元から人形を納めに来たの
ではなく、「人」を納めに、つまり、捨てに
来ていた場所であったものが、後に人形に
変わったのではないだろうか。
地下の空洞は倉庫として改装し、骨を
人形に入れ、奉納された人形たちと共に
供養してやろうと思う。
