The old texts found at the shrines tell of a disaster.

The waters, tainted and black, flowed down the waterfalls, sullying the pools, and became a black mist that enveloped the mountain. The sun turned a muddy crimson. The border between worlds blurred.

Now, the waters are clear, and the mists are white.

It is unknown whether this disaster actually happened, or whether it was passed down as a mere cautionary tale.

If it really did occur, what must the locals have thought?

Did the mountain rumble, appearing shrouded in black shadows? Did the rivers look like long strands of black hair? Did people see Black Water running down the paths? The truth is unclear.

What is clear is that the waters now are clean and pure.

山中の社で見つけた古き書物には、
この山に起きた災厄らしき記述がある。

山を流れる水が穢れ、黒い水に変わる。
黒い水は滝となって流れ、淵に澱み、
黒い霧となって山を包み込む。
霧を通した陽の光は一日を通して
夕暮れのように紅く濁ったものとなる。
現世と隠世の境界があいまいになり、
黒い霧の中で混ざり合うのだと。


今、この山には水の濁りはなく、
霧が黒くなるようなこともない。

この災厄は実際に起こるものなのか、
戒めのために作られた言い伝えなのか、
わからない。

もし、過去に起きたことだとしたら、
何らかの形で鎮められたのだろう。


突如山鳴りが起こり、山を黒い影が覆った
ように見えたとか、川の水が長い黒髪のように
変わったのを見たとか、黒い水が山道を
降りてきたのを見たという者もいるが、真偽は
定かではない。

今もこの山の水は清らかに保たれている。

それは、古い言い伝えを聞いた者が見た
幻なのかもしれない。
