In the Wii remake of Fatal Frame II, Fatal Frame: Deep Crimson Butterfly, several alterations were made to chapter 8. Mayu now follows the player around the village until she is dropped off at the Old Tree, and accompanied by her the player can trigger four new scenes:
*Mayu witnesses the scene of Itsuki's death in the storehouse along with Mio, after which she is inconsolable.
*By crossing Heaven Bridge through the Kiryu house and examining the door to the Tachibana side, then walking away, a cutscene is triggered.
*A cutscene showing the Shadow Festival plays in the Kiryu Projector Room.
*Taking Mayu to Whisper Bridge results in the final cutscene.

These can be done in any order, and affect the player's final ending (for further details, see Deep Crimson Butterfly Endings). If Mayu is left at the Old Tree they cannot be triggered, and all must be seen in one playthrough to have a bearing on the ending.

Mio and Mayu make it to the Old Tree. Mayu's leg has been hurting, and she collapses, exhausted. Mio finds a pinwheel puzzle and leaves Mayu to search for the three pinwheel crests. Hoping for help, she goes to the Storehouse to find Itsuki, and learns the truth: that Itsuki was a ghost, and that he hanged himself before the ritual.

Mio finds the three pinwheel crests in the Osaka House, the Kiryu House and the Tsuchihara grave in the Minakami Cemetery, and returns to the Old Tree. When the puzzle is completed, the door in the Kureha Shrine opens, revealing the path out of the village.
