Woman in Box (also known as "The Woman in the Box" and "The Entrapped"), is a ghost that can be found inside the kimono boxes in the Osaka and Kurosawa houses, as well as emerging from the well in the cellar underneath Kurosawa's residence. She died trying to protect herself and her baby from the Repentance by hiding inside a box, but they were both taken by the Darkness while she was praying.[1] In the original game, her main appearances occur in the Kimono Room of their house, and she is the keeper of the Osaka Crest, leading to speculation that she might have been related to the Osaka Family. In Deep Crimson Butterfly, the Osaka Crest is obtained by fighting Children Playing Tag instead, but Woman in Box does have a new vanishing ghost in Chapter 2: The Twins, where she can be seen in the Osaka House Servant's Quarters standing by the Spirit Stone Radio.
In Fatal Frame II: Crimson Butterfly Remake, the first encounter with Woman in Box is moved to a house in Minakami Settlement in Chapter 2. Whereas in the original game she guarded the Osaka Crest, now she guards one of the Twin Jizo Keys that open the gates to Kurosawa House. All mention of her baby has been removed from the remake, and the art book mentions that the concept art long assumed to be of Woman in Box, showing a woman holding a bundle resembling an infant, is actually a scrapped character called Kinuyo Kurosawa, a member of the Kurosawa family who was unable to give birth to twins.[2]
Woman in Box gets a brief nod in Fatal Frame III, although she does not appear. When Kei Amakura enters the kimono room in the Minakami section of the Manor of Sleep, the lid of the kimono box shakes.

Misc. Info
- Woman in Box has been pointed out as being a direct reference to Sadako from Ringu. The character not only has a short FMV which is similar to Sadako's famous 'eye stare', but later on appears coming out of a well under the Kurosawa House. Additionally, the scene when she comes out of the box is similar to the scene in Ringu when Sadako crawls out of a TV set.
- One of the missions with this ghost involves battling multiple versions of Woman in Box coming out of a well.
- This ghost may be based on the Ubume (産女) ghost, which is the ghost of a mother with a child who has either died while giving birth or died without knowing their child has been properly provided for.
- During the battle with her in Chapter 8 of the original and Deep Crimson Butterfly, her baby can be heard crying, although it is never seen.
