Fatal Frame II Remake Side Stories

In addition to the main story, Fatal Frame II: Crimson Butterfly Remake has 16 side stories, further expanding on the backstories of both major and secondary characters and ghosts. Side stories are unlocked by obtaining broken spirit stones, and involve visiting various locations around the village. Some side stories are unlocked only after completing the game with various endings, and completing them unlocks "sparkling spirit stones" which change the game's endings when equipped.

1: Twin Doll Games

Unlock conditions: Complete Chapter 4

The children played a strange game in the village, searching for twin guardian deity dolls hidden around the village. They say a certain child taught them this game. The children invited the child to play in a house with a hearth right by the entrance.

2: Hide and Seek at the Osaka House

The children's next game involved hiding from spirits. Players who are found by a spirit become one. This too, was taught to the children by their mysteriously absent friend. They said the next game will be in the altar room of the big house.

3: Tag at the Kurosawa House

The next game the children played involves tagging players representing sacrifices. Anyone caught becomes a crimson butterfly. It was yet another game from the child with the butterfly, who invited the children to play at the Candle House.

4: The Unknown Girl of Eikado Temple

Unlock conditions: Complete Chapter 8

The butterfly child joined the other children's games at the candle house. She had taught them the old games, but was sad that she herself did not become a butterfly. The children promised to play with her at the graveyard, but they perished the very next day in the Repentance.

1: The Lost Lover

There were others, before Mio and Mayu. Miyako collapsed in the Osaka house while looking for her lover, Masumi. Masumi found her in a daze and continued on alone in search of an escape. Miyako couldn't bear to wait. She sought out a vantage point from which to view the village.

2: Overlooking the Village

Miyako's mind raced as she looked for Masumi from higher ground. She was reflecting on how she came to be lost in Minakami Village when she caught sight of a person's silhouette inside the Osaka house. She raced back, quite possibly sealing her own fate in that very moment...

3: Nightmare

Miyako fell asleep in the family altar room when she returned to the Osaka house to keep waiting for Masumi. She dreamt of being strangled and falling downward. Feeling cold air seeping up through the floor, Miyako dashed out of the room, thinking it was to blame.

4: Homecoming

Miyako sensed that Masumi was back, but she believed he'd ventured deeper into the house instead of coming to find her. Suspicious, she followed after him. What happened once she found him? Following in Masumi's footsteps could reveal the truth.

1: A Way Out

Land surveyor Masumi Makimura found himself in Minakami Village while surveying a forest for dam construction. His lover Miyako came looking for him, but in the end it was Masumi who found her dazed. With no good options, he swore he'd return, then went looking for a way out.

2: Into the Darkness

Unlock conditions: Complete Chapter 3

Masumi's search of Minakami Village yielded knowledge of a network of underground passages known as the Deep Path. Believing it could be a way out, he searched for the entrance, which led him to the residence of the village festival's host: the Kurosawa house.

3: Untold Feelings

A kusabi took Masumi's life within the Kurosawa house. He died holding the very ring with which he intended to propose to Miyako. "I have to go back," were the last words he wrote before he became a spirit and set off in search of Miyako, lest he break his promise.

4: Neck of the Beloved

Masumi returned to the Osaka house, but not to Miyako. Though he wanted to see her, he knew he couldn't, and headed deeper into the house instead. Miyako went after him. When they were reunited at last, Masumi, now in spirit form, put his hands around his lover's neck...

Folklorist Seijiro Makabe and his assistant Ryozo Munakata traveled to Minakami Village and examined the documents that remained. Finding that the Crimson Sacrifice Ritual is performed by twin shrine maidens to seal the Gate to Hell, they headed to the Osaka House.

2: The Duty of the Osaka House

Feeling eyes on him ever since they entered the village, Seijiro realized the Osaka house was built to surveil visitors to Minakami; they were, in fact, not welcome. Nevertheless, they continued on to the Kiryu house, determined to observe the festival they were forbidden to see.

3: The Ancestry of the Kiryu House

Unlock conditions: Complete Chapter 6

The feared and respected Kiryu house was the twins' home. Seijiro deduced that the village didn't just birth twins-it built them. To reach the Kurosawa house, he must pass under the Heavenly Bridge that links the Kiryu house to its twin, the Tachibana house, where he was headed.

4: The Secret of the Tachibana House

Unlock conditions: Complete Chapter 7

Looking at documents at the Tachibana house, Seijiro discovered that the hollow of an old tree was, unbeknownst to villagers, a grave for twins who partook in a failed ritual. Beyond that lay the Umbral Mound, where he headed in the hope of uncovering further secrets.

5: The Fate of the Outsider

The Umbral Mound was a grave for kusabi, outsiders sacrificed to appease the Gate to Hell if the twins' ritual failed, and Seijiro knew he'd join them soon enough. He sent Ryozo home in a bid to spare the man's life, and ventured on in hopes of seeing the gate for himself.

Objective: Investigate the underground area of the Osaka House

From the crimson fragments of the Kusabi's spirit stone, lingering emotions flow. Seijiro Makabe, upon discovering the Umbral Mound where the martyrs sealing the Gate to the Underworld were enshrined, became certain of the gate's existence. He deduced that somewhere in the Deep Path lay a passage leading to the gate and headed to the underground area of the Osaka residence.

2: The Basement of Osaka House

Unlock conditions: Complete Chapter 6

The Osaka house basement hid belongings left behind by outsiders. Far inside it lay the Deep Path a tangle of old tunnels that, in the end, did not connect to the main passage. Seijiro set out in search of the Earthly Bridge, deep beneath the Tachibana and Kiryu Houses.

3: The Bridge Beneath

The Deep Path was visible from the Earthly Bridge, but there was still no way to reach the main passage. Seijiro supposed Minakami Village had been built atop the ancient Deep Path. He then proceeded to Eikado Temple, which was built to mourn those lost in a past disaster.

4: The Deep Path of Eikado Temple

Seijiro ventured beneath Eikado Temple, only to be greeted by mummies lining the main passage. Such was the fate of outsiders who failed to become kusabi. Determined to find the entrance to the Deep Path, he headed for the heart of the Kurosawa house.

5: The Heart of the Deep Path

Seijiro finally entered the main road deep within the Kurosawa house. He made his way to a ritual altar and the Gate to Hell, only to be captured. He scoured the cell's archives as he was slowly transformed into a kusabi, hoping to see hell as he fell into the Abyss.

1: Reunion

Seijiro's assistant, Ryozo Munakata, ran into his childhood friends Yae and Sae in Minakami. The news that his friends Itsuki and Mutsuki were dead, however, was a shock, having just exchanged letters with them prior. He headed for an old childhood haunt behind Kureha Shrine.

2: The Spider Lilies of Kureha Shrine

Unlock conditions: Complete Chapter 7

Ryozo recalled a game of hide-and-seek with Itsuki behind Kureha Shrine. He'd cried, and Itsuki had comforted him among the white spider lilies. Deducing that Itsuki must have tried to get Yae and Sae out of the village, Ryozo headed for the old tree, which could be the way out.

3: Traces of the Old Tree

Ryozo reached the old tree to find not Itsuki, but some white spider lilies placed on what appeared to be Mutsuki's grave. Believing Itsuki must still be alive, he headed to the storehouse where the three of them played at night as children.

4: Nighttime Tales Inside the Storehouse

Despite the letter from Seijiro, Ryozo decided to visit the storehouse before leaving the village. While there, he recalls Itsuki's words about the twins' ritual, which set him on the path to becoming a folklorist. When he fails to find Itsuki, Ryozo heads to Misono Hill.

5: The Vow of Misono Hill

Ryozo, with Minakami Village now behind him, left a letter for Itsuki, whom he believes to be alive. He will come for Yae and Sae on the day of the festival, just as Itsuki wished, then return for Itsuki.

1: The Gravestone

Itsuki stood before Mutsuki's grave, ruminating over the failed ritual. Mutsuki had not become a butterfly; they had not become one. Knowing what he must do, Itsuki headed to the storehouse to write a letter to Chitose. Once everything was over, she needed to know the truth.

2: Onward

Itsuki helped Yae and Sae escape from Kureha Shrine. Taught to fear the outside world, they were motivated to leave upon hearing of the beautiful stream Ryozo took them to. As Itsuki watched them go, he decided it was time. He returned alone and was imprisoned in the storehouse.

3: The Vestige

His task complete, Itsuki savored his final moments in the moonlight from the storehouse window. Mutsuki's spirit looked on in silence while Itsuki remained unaware of his feelings.

1: Night of the Repentance

The Day of Repentance. Chitose noticed the approaching darkness and fled into the house. The darkness filled the Tachibana residence and closed in on her.

2: Seeking Safety

Chitose escaped the vengeful spirits and hid in a small room inside the house. She could feel things stirring in the darkness. Hoping for help to come, she waited, but she was unable to bear the growing presence of the spirits. She fled.

3: Hidden in the Darkness

As Chitose ran from the wraiths that squirmed through the inky dark, she resented Yae more and more for her current situation and for having her brother Itsuki taken away. When the wraiths disappeared, she headed to Itsuki's room, clinging to the memory of her lost brother.

4: Itsuki's Letter

After reading a note from Itsuki, Chitose realized she had misunderstood Yae. Her grudge faded as the darkness claimed her. In her final moments, she envisioned Mutsuki transforming into a butterfly and returning, thus reuniting both of them with Itsuki.

1: Memories of Days Long Past

Fragments of a shattered spirit stone convey lingering emotions. The twins Itsuki and Mutsuki and their younger sister Chitose cherished their peaceful days at the Tachibana residence. They wished for those moments to last forever.

2: Dream Omen

The three friends once laughed together without a care in the world. As signs of impending doom drew near, Itsuki had a dream. He was waiting for something with Mutsuki and Chitose atop the Heavenly Bridge that connected the Kiryu and Tachibana houses.

3: Yearning

Itsuki dreamt of fleeting hope amid the pangs of nostalgia.

1: The Scene of the Ritual

Akane viewed the ritual on the projector. Her dead sister Azami had returned, but she wasn't alone. Another Azami, butterfly in tow, tried to tell Akane something, but the butterfly-less Azami's voice filled her head instead. She fled to the one place she could clear her mind.

2: A Sealed Heart

Akane withdrew into herself as she sat alone in the twins' room, where butterfly Azami watched over her out of reach. Akane lamented murdering her father at doll Azami's insistence. Yoshitatsu had left notes about the difficulty of making an exorcism device for returned spirits.

3: Exorcism

Thanks to a hidden ability of the Camera Obscura, the exorcism released the evil spirit from the Azami doll. Azami's spirit thanked Mio and disappeared. Akane's soul was freed from the voices of the evil spirits and returned to a state of peace.

With Akane was freed upon exorcising Azami's spirit from the doll, Azami remembered her promise to play with the children in the graveyard, which the Repentance prevented her from keeping.

2: The Beautiful Butterfly

As the children and Azami with the crimson butterfly played among the graves, Azami realized that she had been waiting for the beautiful butterfly, which occurs when two become one by joining hands. "I understand. I fell," Azami said before disappearing.

1: Repeat the Ritual

Sae opened the door to the cell while whispering, "Perform the ritual once more." Sae watched Mayu walk off, and soon Sae was murmuring Yae's name as she wandered.

2: A Secret Custom

Yae and Sae kept playing sacrifice. This childhood ritual in the hina doll room wasn't necessary after their escape, but it was their secret. Sae's fall off a cliff returned her spirit to Minakami, where she joined the villagers in the main hall on the night of the Repentance.

3: Eternal Night

Sae, her spirit newly returned from hell, joined the kusabi in massacring the villagers on the night of the Repentance. Covered in spurts of blood resembling a torn butterfly wing, Sae let out a crazed cackle as she hunted down the survivors.

From the crimson fragments of Sae's spirit stone, her lingering emotions are revealed. After returning from the Abyss, Sae exacted revenge on the villagers gathered in the Kurosawa House main hall. Yet, within her heart, conflicting emotions swirled. Her feelings lead toward the Kurosawa House main hall.

2: A Heart Divided

Sae's spirit, which shrieked with delight as she murdered the villagers upon returning from hell, actually wished to be helped. She drifted through the dark village toward the storehouse that held Itsuki, struggling to hold the contradictions within her.

3: Fall from Grace

As Sae's spirit entered the storehouse, she recalled that Itsuki had chosen to die, believing that Yae and Sae had found happiness outside the village. She heard Yae's voice in her moment of despair and began to drift toward Misono Hill.

4: Mirrored Tears

Sae realized she couldn't leave the village as she approached Misono Hill. She stopped in her tracks and, in a mirror image of Yae, began to cry.

From the crimson fragments of Yae's spirit stone, her lingering emotions are revealed. Yae recalled the moment she decided to escape the village. It all began when her childhood friend Ryozo Munakata came to the village. Her emotions flowed into the Kurosawa House's front yard.

2: Reunited Beneath the Tree

Yae and Sae were reunited with their childhood friend Ryozo. Though perplexed at how much older he was, they were reassured to find his personality unchanged. He told them he wanted to show them something using an image-projection machine that he had placed in the Tachibana house.

3: As Promised

Ryozo's projector depicted a stream from their memories. He'd taken Yae and Sae there on a trip outside the village when they were young, and they'd promised to revisit it someday, just the two of them. Determined to leave, Yae and Sae headed to a lake where they used to play.

4: Before We Go

Yae and Sae stood quietly by their old haunt. As they gazed upon the familiar scenery, Yae realized the water was connected to the stream from their memories. Sae left after telling Yae that Itsuki had something to say to her. Yae then made her way behind the storehouse alone.

5: Last Words

Behind the storehouse, Yae spoke with Itsuki through the window. Though Itsuki held back his final words, Yae still felt his emotions. Grateful for everything Itsuki had given her, Yae hoped to one day return to the village as a butterfly. On the day of the festival, when Yae went to Misono Hill to find Sae, she discovered the cruel fate that awaited her.

6: The Lost Village

On the day of the festival, Yae returned to the village to find it missing. Realizing the ritual had failed, she sobbed endlessly and regretted letting go of Sae's hand, all the while feeling her memories of the village slipping away.

From the crimson fragments of Mayu's spirit stone, her emotions are revealed. As Mayu connected with Sae's circumstances and feelings, she began to lose the distinction between herself and Sae. While working with Mio to escape the village, Sae's emotions surged within her. Pushed by Sae's voice, Mayu's feelings flow toward the Heavenly Bridge.

2: Falling Petals

Mayu, seemingly pulled by an invisible force, almost fell from the Heavenly Bridge. She murmured about falling alone, while Mio took her hand and expressed a wish that they had fallen together that fateful day. Their thoughts seemed to intertwine, echoing the connection between Yae and Sae. After reading Yae's note, Mayu decided to go to that place.

3: Moonbeams

As Mayu arrived at Ukishima, she whispered, "This place too will disappear soon. Shall we escape together?" Mio replied, "We will be able to leave this village soon." They spoke as if they were Yae and Sae. Mio found a film reel at the water's edge. Mayu seemed fascinated by it.

4: Regression

Mayu watched as the projector showed images of the stream from her memories, repeating the word "beautiful" in a childlike voice until the Abyss flickered into view. "I have dreamt of this," she whispered darkly, as though the image were pulling her in.

5: Dreams of the Abyss

Mio entered Mayu's dream and found her standing at the edge of the Abyss. Mio took Mayu's hand, pulling her from the dream. Watching Mayu continue to sleep, Mio renewed her determination to escape the village together.

From the crimson fragments of Mio's spirit stone, forgotten memories flow forth. Both Mio and Mayu had lost a blank stretch of time. Following the faint traces of her memory, Mio heads toward Misono Hill.

2: Nostalgia

Forgotten memories of a distant past. As children, the two had lost their way while trying to return from the stream. Guided by crimson-colored butterflies, Mayu was led to the entrance of Minakami Village. Mio tried to stop Mayu, but as they headed back toward the path home, Mayu lost her footing at the edge of a cliff and fell.
