Unnamed in the game, the "Escaping Twins" were two Twin Shrine Maidens of Minakami Village. Hoping to escape the Crimson Sacrifice Ritual, they tried to flee the village through the door in the Kureha Shrine. They were caught and killed, and the Ceremony Master at the time sealed the passageway to prevent other twins from trying to escape.[1] The villagers were told that the twins died in a cave-in, and the passage was sealed out of concern for their safety.[2] In the original game and Deep Crimson Butterfly, the twins appear in a file photo taken in the Kureha Shrine.
In the Fatal Frame II: Crimson Butterfly Remake, a new note expands on the story of the escaping twins. According to this note, a former head of the Kiryu family, who created the mechanism sealing the path out of the village, shared the secret with a pair of twins from the Osaka Family, who used the information to attempt an escape but were killed in the process. Afterwards, the Family Crests were hidden, and the Kiryu family head took his own life to atone.[3]
