After the villagers capture Mayu, the player as Mio does not go after her sister and instead returns to the Kureha Shrine, where the door behind the altar now stands open. The player is given two chances to change their minds before the FMV begins.
Murmuring an apology for breaking her promise, Mio escapes along the Underground Passage. Suddenly she is halted by a voice behind her, asking, "Are you leaving me again?" Itsuki's voice warns her not to look back, but the voice speaks again. This time, sounding like Mayu, she reminds Mio of their promise to stay together forever.
Mio turns and sees that she is being pursued by Sae Kurosawa's ghost, who reaches out for her. Just as Sae grabs her, Mio wakes up alone in the forest, just where she and Mayu were sitting at the beginning of the game. As she calls out for Mayu, Sae and Mayu's voices can be heard, overlapping:
"I'll wait... forever."
Misc. Info
- The Lingering Scent ending counts as a Game Over rather than actual completion of the game, but is listed as an ending in the Xbox version of the game.
- The ending's Japanese name, Mayoiga, translates to "Lost House", referring to a story from the "Tōno Monogatari" by Kunio Yanagita. Those who get lost in the mountain forest are said to end up coming across the house, similar to the story of the Lost Village.
- An early version of this ending from the August 2003 prototype build can be viewed here.

Notes
- ↑ Although this ending does not contradict the events of Fatal Frame III, it results in a Game Over, and therefore is probably not intended to be canon.
