The head of the Kurosawa family, Ryokan Kurosawa was the last Ceremony Master of Minakami Village, and father to twins Sae and Yae Kurosawa in Fatal Frame II. When alive, his job was to preside over the Hidden Ceremony, Cutting Ritual and Crimson Sacrifice Ritual.
Ryokan Kurosawa presided over the ritual of Itsuki and Mutsuki Tachibana, in which Mutsuki was sacrificed. This ritual failed, which meant that Ryokan's twin daughters were next in line to perform it a year later. In between the time of the Tachibana twins' ceremony and when the Kurosawa twins' ceremony was to take place, the Malice overflowing from the Hellish Abyss was becoming stronger than ever. In the hope of saving the Kurosawa twins from the fate of having going through with the ritual, Itsuki sent a letter to his childhood friend, Ryozo Munakata, asking for help.
Ryozo arrived at the village with his teacher Seijiro Makabe, who happened to be a folklorist. Ryokan was concerned that his daughters would not be able to perform the ritual in time to prevent the Repentance. Seeing no other choice, Ryokan chose Makabe to take part in the Hidden Ritual and become a Kusabi. The ritual was carried out in the Rope Temple, where the sacrifice was slashed by the Veiled Priests, before being thrown into the Hellish Abyss whilst still alive. This sacrifice appeased the Hellish Abyss a little, but was not enough.
In the midst of this, Sae and Yae ran away with Itsuki's help. Itsuki was imprisoned in the Storehouse, and Sae was recaptured under Ryokan's orders, but Yae became lost in the surrounding forest. The villagers sent to search for her could not find her, eventually presuming she had died in the forest after being unable to find her way out. In desperation, Ryokan sacrificed Sae alone, at the hands of a Veiled Priest. Misc Info
- Ryokan's hostile spirit resembles that of a Sokushinbutsu, which were Buddhist monks or priests who "obtained enlightenment" during their lives by causing their own death in a strict and painful way that caused mummification.
- Ryokan can summon two Veiled Priests to take his own place at any time whilst fighting him; however, if they are defeated, he will be unable to call them back.
- Ryokan Kurosawa was a Remaining, as he and his twin brother had performed the Crimson Sacrifice Ritual in the past. This is revealed both in his hidden ghost entry in the spirit list, and in his spirit stone.
