Azami Kiryu is a minor ghost in Fatal Frame II.
Past
Azami was one of the daughters of Yoshitatsu Kiryu, the head of the Kiryu family and a master doll maker. Her twin sister was Akane. Although Azami was born first, due to the village's traditions she was considered the younger twin. She and her sister were very close; they were always together. It is unknown how long ago Azami and her sister lived in Minakami Village.
Azami and Akane had to perform the Crimson Sacrifice Ritual when they were very young. During the Ritual, a Veiled Priest attempted to assist Akane. However, Azami protested and said that she wanted only Akane to do it. Their ritual succeeded. Azami became a butterfly, and Akane received the red butterfly mark of a Remaining upon her throat.
Due to Akane's depression and guilt over the loss of her sister, Yoshitatsu created a doll in Azami's likeness to comfort her. Akane spent so much time thinking of her sister and whispering to the doll that it became possessed and began to control her. Azami's spirit appeared to her father in a dream and asked him to destroy the doll. She left a note in Akane's diary explaining that no substitute was needed for her because she had become one with her sister, and again encouraging the doll's destruction. Unfortunately, she was too late. Akane killed Yoshitatsu before having her soul sucked out by the doll.
Azami's ghost later appears to Mio Amakura as a guide. Her ghost is seen in the Kiryu house emitting soft whimpers and asking to be killed; however, she is actually asking Mio to destroy the doll. Her ghost guides Mio to the doll parts needed to enable the mechanism that opens the Earth Bridge.
Crimson Butterfly Remake
Fatal Frame II: Crimson Butterfly Remake further develops the story of the Kiryu family. In this version of the game, Azami's spirit appears with a butterfly to differentiate her from Akane and the doll; since she became a crimson butterfly during her ritual, the butterfly could be considered her true form.[1] Akane's side story shows how Azami continued to watch over Akane and try to help her, but was unable to reach her through the doll's influence.[2] When Azami became aware of Mio's presence in the village, she sought her help in saving Akane's soul.[3]
After removing the safety mechanism from the Camera Obscura, Mio gains the new ability to exorcise beings from hell itself.[4] This allows her to drive out the evil spirit possessing the doll for good, earning Azami's gratitude.
As a spirit, Azami would sometimes appear to the children of the village, teaching them games everyone else had forgotten.[5] The day before the Repentance, she promised to play with them in the cemetery, but everyone died before she could keep her promise. After the evil spirit is released from the manikin, Azami and the children are able to play in the cemetery as promised.[6]
