The Mourners are the guardians of the Hellish Abyss that lies beneath Minakami Village. They assist in preparing for and play a minor role in the Crimson Sacrifice Ritual, and are the only ones allowed to go near the Abyss. Those who break the village's laws and look upon the Abyss are also forcibly made into Mourners.[1]

Crimson Sacrifice Ritual

Once the year of a Crimson Sacrifice Ritual arrives, the Mourners have their eyes sewn shut to prevent them from seeing into the Hellish Abyss.[1] The Mourners are present during the ritual, and are charged with disposing of the body of the sacrificed twin by throwing it into the Abyss. Once the ritual is over, they spend the rest of their lives underground and are not allowed to venture to the surface.[1]

Grave Keepers

In Fatal Frame II: Crimson Butterfly Remake, some Mourners also act the grave keepers of the village, living in small houses in the Abandoned Graveyard behind the main cemetery and guarding the Umbral Mound. The idea of a Mourner as a grave keeper was something Makoto Shibata wished to include since the original Fatal Frame II.[2] The Abandoned Graveyard is where gravestones are placed for those without names, such as the Mourners themselves.[3]

The Repentance

Following the failure of the Tachibana twins' ritual, the Malice coming forth from the Hellish Abyss became so strong that half of the Mourners were driven mad and jumped into it. Out of desperation, the Ceremony Master, Ryokan Kurosawa, ordered more Mourners be made from "the sinners."[4]

The Mourners participated in the ritual when Sae Kurosawa was hanged and her body thrown into the Abyss. However, the Abyss erupted, causing the Repentance and covering the entire village in Darkness.

Misc. Info

  • Since the Mourners' eyes are sewn shut, they cannot see Mio, but they can hear her. Therefore, if she is still while battling them, they will have a difficult time finding her.
  • The ghosts' long-range attack involves swinging their arms around, as they attempt to grab out towards the unseen intruder.
