Akane Kiryu is a ghost in Fatal Frame II.
Past
Akane and her sister Azami were both Twin Shrine Maidens of Minakami Village, many years before the Repentance.[1] Though unusually young, they successfully took part in the Crimson Sacrifice Ritual.[2] Azami turned into a butterfly and Akane became a Remaining.
After Azami's death, Akane became depressed, unable to cope with the loss of her sister. In order to comfort her, her father built a life-sized doll in Azami's likeness. Akane believed that the doll was Azami, and she treated it as such. She was always with it, constantly whispering in its ear. She seemed to be acting like her usual self again.[3]
However, Akane spent so much time with the doll that, eventually, a malicious spirit possessed it. It had so much influence over Akane that she began to act like a doll and began saying, "I don't want to kill."[4] When Yoshitatsu realised what had happened, he resolved to destroy the doll by throwing it into the Hellish Abyss. However, the spirit possessing the doll warned Akane of her father's plans. Akane broke the doll mechanism that opened the passage to the Abyss and hid its head and arms in boxes around the house.[5] Under the control of the doll she believed to be her sister, Akane killed her father to save it. It is not known what happened to Akane or the doll afterwards.
Crimson Butterfly Remake
Fatal Frame II: Crimson Butterfly Remake further develops the story of the Kiryu family. After her father's death, Akane retreated to the Twins' Room, a place that had always made her feel calm.[6] Once there, she regained some clarity and realised what she had done.[7] Her distraught spirit remained sitting in that room, unable to perceive the real Azami watching over her.
In the Sprouting Wings and Remaining Sun endings, Akane and Azami are reunited. Akane takes Azami's hand, and their spirits are released from the village's curse.

Misc. Info
- Akane and Azami are the youngest known twin shrine maidens to be sacrificed.
- Akane and Azami's kimonos are also worn by the mysterious 'Hanging Twins' who appear in one of Mayu's psychic flashbacks.
- The story of Akane and the Twin Doll was originally intended to be an optional sidequest, but developers realised the possessed doll was scary enough to merit more attention.[8]
