Ink of the Soul
"Ink of the Soul" (紫魂ノ墨, purple soul ink) is a term used in Fatal Frame III. It was the ink used to tattoo the Tattooed Priestess in the Piercing of the Soul ritual. It was composed of red and indigo ink, blood of the living and the dead, gathered by the Engravers in the Rite of Purple Ink.
When the priestess was tattooed with this ink, the pain of the living for the dead was transferred to her, appeasing the suffering of the Worshippers.[1]
After the holly had been engraved, the excess ink was washed away in running water from the Other Shore (also known as the Sea of Endless Night).[1] Ink of the Soul was also used to dye the dolls impaled by the Handmaidens.[2]
Also Known As
In the English translation, the ink is also known as "the Ink of Tattoo"[3] and "Purple Ink".[1] The Japanese text uses the same name throughout, either 紫魂ノ墨 (purple soul ink) or the abbreviated 紫魂 (purple soul).
