Ruri is a black and white cat who lives in Rei Kurosawa's House in Fatal Frame III. Her name means "lapis lazuli", a reference to her blue eyes. Ruri's favourite places are the sofa in the Living Room, the garden on sunny days, and Miku's lap.[1]
There is some inconsistency over who Ruri belonged to. Developer diaries state that she is Rei's cat but her name was chosen by Miku,[2] while the complete guidebook says that Miku's parents gave her the cat because she was emotionally shut down after Mafuyu's disappearance.[3] This may be a continuity error, as Miku's parents both died long before Mafuyu disappeared.
During the game, Ruri can be found wandering around Rei Kurosawa's house. At night she is frequently in Miku's room.
In Hour V, Ruri can be seen hissing at something unseen in the Altar Room, and afterwards she will jump out of the closet at the end of the hallway.
Misc. Info
- It is not known whether Ruri is male or female.
- It is possible to play with Ruri by pressing X next to her and then O. In response, Ruri may sniff Rei's hand and rub against it affectionately, or paw at it.
- At one point the creators considered giving Ruri a more active role in the game as a kind of "ghost detector", indicating the presence of hidden ghosts that otherwise could not be found. On a more humorous note, they also considered a "Ruri-model Camera Obscura". According to Shibata, "It would be held dangling in your arms, and when you looked through it it had a night-vision scope. And to take photos you had to press its head and it would go "Meow~" (laughs)."[4]
