Background Info

The Well Room is the small room off the Closet Hallway in the Manor of Sleep. It contains a well surrounded by sacred rope and paper.

This room was used by the Kuze Family to dispose of male children, as the Shrine was run by women only and had no need for boys. At the age of four, the children were cast into the well with ceremonial items and left for dead.

It is possible that this tradition was no longer strictly observed at the time of the Unleashing. Kaname Ototsuki ought to have been killed in this way, but instead his mother Kyouka smuggled him out to be raised in a nearby village. Despite Kyouka's secrecy, the family head seemed to be aware that Kaname was living outside the Shrine.
