Lost Patients
|
Lost patients in Fatal Frame III are Tattooed Curse victims who succumb while in hospital. Rumours about such patients are widespread among hospital staff[1] and in the psychiatric field,[2] where their condition is known as the "dream disease" (夢の病, yume no yamai).[3]
Patients are usually diagnosed with PTSD (Post Traumatic Stress Disorder). They all report dreaming of a manor in the snow complain of pain with no obvious cause and bruising that no one else can see, and sleep for days at a time. After 1-2 months they disappear without a trace, leaving behind sooty marks.[2]
The main difference between Lost Patients and other victims of the Tattooed Curse is that they have been admitted to the hospital or a medical facility for treatment, and so their symptoms and behaviour have been reliably documented. Such cases have been reported for many decades; during his research into the urban legend, Kei Amakura receives some patient records that were originally recorded on a gramophone.[4]
Hospital staff seem to be somewhat uneasy and suspicious about such patients. Miku mentions that the staff gave her Yoshino Takigawa's Diary because they did not want to keep it at the hospital.[5]
