Shizu Amakura is the mother of Mio and Mayu Amakura (the heroines of Fatal Frame II). She was born and raised in a mountain village in the vicinity of Minakami, and so had heard rumours about the Lost Village all her life.[2] Kei Amakura is her younger brother.
Past
Shizu met and eventually married Misao Asou, who made the unusual move of taking Shizu's surname of Amakura. Shizu eventually gave birth to twin daughters, Mio and Mayu. For a while, Shizu lived with her husband and children in the Minakami area, and Shizu repeatedly warned her daughters not to stay out playing too late or they would become lost in the village.[3]
When Misao vanished in the forest, Shizu told her daughters that he had died, and did not speak of the matter further. To make matters worse, while playing in the forest, Mayu severely injured her leg and was crippled for life. Shizu decided to move away, but because of her lingering memories of and feelings for her missing husband, she returned with Mio and Mayu before the area was to be submerged by a dam.[4]
While wandering the forest, Mio and Mayu both went missing, and only Mio was found alive. At some point, Shizu became ill and had to be hospitalized, and left Mio in the care of her younger brother Kei. Her fate is unknown; she is presumably still in the hospital.
Translation Error
Shizu is mentioned in an in-game article about Mayu's disappearance in Fatal Frame III. The Japanese text reads:
- "The missing person is Tokyo resident Mayu Amakura (15), the oldest daughter of Shizu Amakura (35)"
However, this was mistranslated, and the English version reads:
- "The missing people are Tokyo resident Shizu Amakura (35) and her eldest daughter Mayu (15)."
This mistake is also present in the French, German, Spanish and Italian versions, which follow from the English one. Since the translation states that Shizu was also spirited away, there was some confusion about her status. Shizu is not dead, only ill. Her hospitalization was also mentioned in pre-game articles in Famitsu gaming magazine. The Japanese version of Letter from Kei 2 also mentions that Kei has been looking after Mio because Shizu is prone to illness,[5] but this was omitted from the English translation.
Misc Info
- Prior to the release of the third game, Shizu had only been mentioned in official guidebooks. She is not mentioned in Deep Crimson Butterfly.
