The Grave Courtyard is an area in the Manor of Sleep in Fatal Frame III.

Background Info

The Grave Courtyard marks the boundary between the older Manor of Sleep, which was sealed as a result of the Unleashing, and the new area that was built for the Kuze family to live in afterwards. It is the first area that Rei Kurosawa sees in her daydream, and the spirit of Yuu Asou appears here several times, leading her deeper into the Manor.

The mound of graves in the courtyard commemorates the Shrine Carpenters who were sacrificed to seal the older Manor and contain the Rift. The Engraved Men and some of the Shrine Carpenters who were not entombed in the Stained Corridor were wrapped in white cloth and buried alive under the tombstones, to become Sacrificial Pillars.

It is possible to walk across the roof of the courtyard, and two rooms can be accessed this way. At one point in the game, Shigure Kuze can be seen passing above, on her way to care for Kyouka Kuze.

• At the beginning of the game, Rei spots Yuu walking through this way.

• Kozue Kuzuhara - appears behind the row of graves during Hour III.
• Shigure Kuze - walks across the roof above.
• Kiriko Asanuma - appears from inside the well.

Misc. Info

• This is the first explorable area in the game.
• A promotional image shows Rei fighting the Handmaidens Minamo, Hisame and Amane Kuze in the Grave Courtyard. No such battle takes place in the game, and Amane only appears as an attacking ghost in Mission Mode.
