The Boat of Passing (駕籠舟, kagobune, "palanquin boat") was a palanquin owned by the Kuze Family. When a young woman had been chosen to become the next Tattooed Priestess at the Kuze Shrine, she would be taken there from her home in this palanquin.[1] When it was not in use, the palanquin was suspended above the Round Window Foyer.[2]
Misc. Info
- The Boat of Passing was not a literal boat. Though omitted in non-Japanese releases of the game, Akito Kashiwagi notes in his writings that locals of the area around the Kuze Shrine likened the sight of a palanquin travelling through the snow to the sight of a boat sailing, and thus referred to them as yukibune (雪舟, "snow boats").[3] It is likely that the name of the Boat of Passing has a similar origin.
- In Hour VI, a hidden ghost of Reika Kuze before her initiation as a priestess can be captured in the palanquin.[4]
