Yoshino Takigawa's Diary

Yoshino Takigawa is a ghost that appears in Fatal Frame III. The sole survivor of a plane crash, she is the only living person that Rei Kurosawa encounters within the Manor of Sleep, and later appears as a hostile spirit after she succumbs to the Tattooed Curse.

Past

In early August of 1988, the plane Yoshino was travelling on with her parents and fiancé crashed. All of the other passengers, including her family, were killed in the accident, but Yoshino miraculously managed to survive by being thrown from the aircraft close to the ground, escaping the ensuing fire and having her fall cushioned by trees.[1] Yoshino lay surrounded by the dead bodies of her family and fiancé for four days before finally being rescued and taken to hospital. Though her injuries were mild, she was diagnosed with PTSD and hospitalised long-term.[2]

During her hospital stay, Yoshino began keeping a diary in the hope that it would provide some relief and stop the nightmares she was having. On August 13th, Yoshino wrote that she had dreamed of an abandoned house in the snow, and that her dead loved ones were somewhere inside. She followed them into the manor, dropping a note saying she didn't choose to survive, along the way. During her exploration of the manor, she was pursued and touched by the ghost of the Tattooed Priestess.[3]

Yoshino became so afraid of falling asleep that she would hurt herself to stay awake.[1] During her waking hours, she noticed a painful tattoo spreading across her body that only she could see,[3] and was sometimes heard muttering to herself or singing a strange lullaby.[1] By the end of August, she had begun to sleep for days on end and only woke for brief periods.[3]

Fatal Frame III

When Rei Kurosawa first begins to dream of the Manor of Sleep, she encounters Yoshino, who runs away. She later finds Yoshino crouched on the floor of the foyer muttering to herself and reaches out in concern, but Yoshino scuttles away, frightened of being touched. She looks up in terror when the Tattooed Priestess appears behind them, and flees screaming as she approaches. The following night, Rei encounters a distressed Yoshino again, her passport lying on the floor near where she sits. As Rei turns to leave, Yoshino begs Rei to wake her up.

After confirming Yoshino's identity, Rei goes to visit her at Katsuragi Hospital, where she has been fast asleep for the past few days.[1] Suddenly, the tattoo begins to spread over Yoshino's body, her eyes opening as the tattoo creeps into them. Rei flees in terror, but stops when she hears Yoshino cry out, "I don't want to see anymore!" Rei turns back to check the bed, and finds nothing but soot-like marks where Yoshino lay mere moments before. Due to the strange circumstances surrounding her disappearance, Yoshino is considered a lost patient by hospital staff.[1]

Even after her death, Yoshino's spirit continues to cry and wander around the Manor of Sleep, clutching a photo of her and and her fiancé. Her spirit is tormented and followed by several Black Shadows. While their true identity is unknown, Yoshino believes them to be the ghosts of her family and fiancé, who blame her for surviving the plane crash instead of dying with them.

Misc. Info

  • Yoshino is one of the ghosts who frequently appears in Rei Kurosawa's House.
  • In early versions of the Fatal Frame III trailer, Yoshino's eyes appeared completely black when she opened them in the hospital. Later, and the final version, the tattoo slowly creeps into her eyes.
  • Yoshino is the only character in the series to have a known birthday: the image of Burnt Passport gives her date of birth as June 6, 1961. Unfortunately, this date creates a slight discrepancy in the game's timeline. See Timeline Discrepancy for more information.
