The Hanging Prison is a cage in which the Tattooed Priestess resided until the Piercing of the Soul ceremony was complete and she was ready to be impaled in the Chamber of Thorns. It was suspended above the Tattoo Altar, and could be raised to the third floor using the mechanism on the altar. Once raised to the third floor, it could be accessed via the Kimono Room and the Flickering Hallway.

From her arrival in a palanquin, throughout her imprisonment in the Hanging Prison, up to her descent of the Abyss in a cage suspended from a rope, the Tattooed Priestess was generally held in a state of suspension above the ground, and Yuu's Notes speculate that the suspended position had some significance in the Kuze customs.
