Shrine Carpenters
|
The Shrine Carpenters in Fatal Frame III were the top carpenters in the region who specialized in building shrines. They were hired by the Kuze Family Head to seal the Kuze Shrine and construct the Rift Shrine and the Shrine of Sleep. There were ten total shrine carpenters. All of them were young and wore white clothing with a tall white court hat.[1] Tengai Narumi was chosen to become the next Master Builder, as he excelled in his craft over the other Shrine Carpenters.
After the completion of their task, all of the Shrine Carpenters, except the Master Builder, were made into Sacrificial Pillars to prevent the Rift from spreading and to protect the secrets of the shrine. Most of their bodies were placed into the walls of the Stained Corridor and under the large mound of stones seen in the Grave Courtyard.
Shrine Carpenter Differences
In the Manor of Sleep three different sets of Shrine Carpenter ghosts are encountered, each are separate in distinction.
Men in White
Unnamed Shrine Carpenters that were the first to be killed to become Sacrificial Pillars. They were young men summoned from the villages near the Kuze Shrine. At least five of the Shrine Carpenters working at the Kuze Shrine were in this class, and they can be randomly encountered throughout the game.
Engraved Men
Four Shrine Carpenters that were members of the Moriya Family. They were already in the service of the Kuze Shrine at the time of the Unleashing, and led the construction of the Rift Shrine. They were exposed to the pain of holly and appear covered in blue tattoos. They assisted in the killing of the Men in White before becoming Sacrificial Pillars themselves. Their sacrifices were used as part of the Rift Shrine seal over the door leading to the Shrine Courtyard. Each of the four ghosts are fought only once in the game.
Hidden Face Man
The Master Builder, who leads the Shrine Carpenters. His clan was apparently in service to the Kuze Shrine as well, though he is the only named Narumi carpenter in the game, and apart from normal carpentry work, it was their job to make sure that carpenters were silenced in accordance with tradition.[2] Tengai wears a mask to cover his face and carries a bloody hatchet as his weapon. After all of the other Shrine Carpenters were sacrificed, he committed suicide in a small room in the center of the Stained Corridor. His sacrifice bolsters the Rift Shrine seal over the door leading to the Shrine Courtyard. He appears throughout the early part of the game.
