After defeating Reika, Rei once again enters the Chamber of Thorns, which is now free from Miasma. She finds Reika and Kaname lying side by side, and closes Reika's eyes.
Through a passage concealed at the back of the Chamber, Rei finds herself standing on a shoreline under a night sky. To her right, a river flows to meet the sea, bearing floating lanterns. Reika and Kaname are lying there inside a boat. Whispering the final stanza of the Handmaiden's Song, Rei pushes the boat out from the shore.
As it drifts out to sea, the lanterns are able to move freely on the current. A light grows on the horizon, and in the distance stands a crowd of shadowy figures. A similar shadow rises from each floating lantern as the souls of the dead are finally able to cross over. Among the shadows, Rei spots Yuu, walking away from her.
Her tattoo spreading once more, Rei runs into the water after him, calling out that she wants to go too. Yuu comes back and embraces her, and she says, "This time I'm going with you."
But although Yuu understands her feelings, he tells her he must go alone. As he speaks, Rei's tattoos pass from her to him, and he moves away from her. "When you die, then I'll be gone, forever. As long as you go on living, a part of me will continue to live on. That's why I need you to live." He carries the tattoos to the Other Side, and the light on the horizon fades, taking the crowd with it.
Rei wakes up in her bed once again. The rain has stopped, and the sun is shining through her window. Rei looks at her skin, no longer marked by the tattoo, and begins to cry.
After the credits, Rei and Miku are shown on the beach together, alive and well, watching the sun coming up. Miku says that she now understands why she and Rei were allowed to survive. Rei agrees that she will go on living, even with the pain.
In this ending, Kei Amakura is presumed to be dead, and there is no mention of Mio Amakura's fate.
Regional Difference: In the Japanese version of the game, Rei's tattoos disappear as Yuu absorbs them. In the US and European versions of the game, the tattoos stay visible on Yuu's skin as he departs.
Misc. Info
Although this ending has not been confirmed as canon within the series, Makoto Shibata has stated in an interview[1] and on Twitter[2] that game staff intended the Photograph Ending to be the true ending.
