Rift Shrine
| ||||||||||||||||
After the Unleashing occurred, Reika Kuze began wandering the Manor of Sleep as if in a dream, casting anywhere she roamed into the Rift. [1] The Rift had to be contained, so Yashuu Kuze brought in Shrine Carpenters to build this shrine. [2]
The courtyard leading to the Engraving Shrine (also called the Kuze Shrine) was sealed into the depths of a great cavern so that not even a ray of sunlight would ever enter the darkness. [3] The Rift Shrine was built as a "hidden" (in other words unseen) shrine just outside this great cavern, to prevent the Rift from spreading and to ensure that the Tattooed Priestess wandered in the cavern forever.[4] [5] It prevented the miasma from entering the rest of the manor. As the Unleashing continued, however, it became necessary to build further extensions onto the Manor and turn the entire structure into part of the Rift Shrine, resulting in a huge and complicated building.[6]
The courtyard full of Kushimi Dolls, centred around the Spirit Tree, is the true Rift Shrine.[7] After the Shrine Courtyard was sealed into the great cavern the Shrine Carpenters boarded up the door.[8] A seal was placed over it, which was arranged to purify the darkness contained within the great cavern and keep it concealed.[9] The seal consisted of the Sacrificial Pillar sacrifices of the four Engraved Men and the Master Builder, Tengai Narumi.
Misc. Info
- In order to break the seal over the door leading to the Shrine Courtyard, you must defeat the four Engraved Men and Tengai Narumi. Until you do so, the door remains sealed tight.
- On two separate occasions Tengai Narumi stops Rei Kurosawa from entering this door, saying "It must not be opened... that Priestess... the Shrine must be sealed." and "It must not be spread. The Unleashing cannot be allowed to continue!"
- After breaking this seal and entering the Shrine Courtyard for the first time, for the rest of the game you must collect Purifying Lights to purify the darkness created by the miasma.
