Ayane is a character in two series created by Tecmo's Team Ninja: Dead or Alive and Ninja Gaiden. She makes an appearance in Fatal Frame V as the player character in a side mission, and is voiced by Wakana Yamazaki.
A kunoichi of the Hajinmon sect of Mugen Tenshin-ryu, Ayane meets a girl named Tsumugi Katashina, who has attempted suicide. Sensing a similarity between them, she gives Tsumugi a special bracelet, the same as one Ayane herself wears. When Tsumugi goes to Mount Hikami, Ayane follows her, using the "purple thread" that connects their two bracelets to track her. Ayane enters Mikomori Hot Springs, but is unprepared to battle non-corporeal enemies, and barely escapes with her life. To enable her to sneak past the ghosts, she has a special "script of hiding" painted on her back, which runs off in water but can be restored with bottles of ink that she finds around the mountain. She also carries a Spirit Stone Flashlight that she can use to stun ghosts, but unlike the other three protagonists, she cannot defeat them, so she must use stealth to avoid detection.
Thus armed, Ayane returns to Mount Hikami and this time makes it to the Shrine of the Ephemeral, where she finds Tsumugi and rescues her. They escape the spirits pursuing them, and with Ayane's encouragement, Tsumugi resolves to live on and be strong.
