Miu Hinasaki is a character in Fatal Frame V. Her mother, Miku Hinasaki, disappeared when she was three, and Miu was raised by a foster mother. She can sense people's emotions when she touches them, and as a result she feels isolated and empty. After hearing a rumour that her mother has been sighted on Mount Hikami, she goes there to search for her.
Background
After Miku disappeared, Miu was raised by Sachi Iyama, a friend of Miku's who reported her missing. Because of her psychic abilities, Miu was always painfully aware that the foster-family felt more pity for her than love. She had no one to open up to about the things she knew and saw. She gradually became disgusted by people's tedious insincerity, but her attitude towards herself was no better: she believed she was nothing, and placing no value on herself, went along with whatever people told her to do.
At the beginning of the game, Miu is working for a talent agency. She hopes to become an actress, but mostly takes work as a gravure model.
Fatal Frame V
Hearing a rumour that her mother was seen on Mount Hikami, Miu goes there to search for her. Using the cable car, she gets as far as the Shrine of the Ephemeral, but as she has no way to fight off the ghosts she encounters, she quickly gets into difficulties. Finally, she is pulled into a casket by a Pale Mistress and made into a Pillar.
In the Sixth Drop, Yuri frees her from the casket, and the two make their way down the mountain together, though they are forced to take a detour through Hikami Tunnel when the cable car loses power. At the shop, Yuri glances into her memories and witnesses Miu's self-loathing and contempt for the lies and base desires of the people around her. Miu quickly becomes aware of what is happening, and with her stronger psychic abilities, she turns the tables and glimpses some of Yuri's worst memories as well. Angry that Yuri would pry through her memories without asking, she warns her never to attempt to read her mind again.
That night, the antiques shop becomes a hotspot of spiritual activity. Multiple ghosts appear, and both Yuri and Rui are spirited away. Ren goes in search of Rui, while Miu goes after Yuri, borrowing her Camera Obscura to use on the way. She spots Yuri wandering into the water at the Lake of the Departed, and the sight stirs up memories of watching her mother leave. She catches up to Yuri and, using the same words as Hisoka to bring her back from the trance, begs Yuri not to leave her too. At that moment, a very powerful spirit appears. She forces them to flee the mountain again, but Miu and Yuri begin to understand each other a little better.
However, Miu still hasn't given up on finding her mother. She borrows Yuri's Camera Obscura and returns to the mountain once more, this time with a photograph of Miku to use as a token. She finds her way to the House of Joining, and discovers that her mother took part in the Ghost Marriage ritual, forming a union between herself and her brother, and then went into a black box as a sacrifice. The Wedding Celebrant tries to warn Miu away from the casket, saying that even a Shadowborn must serve her duty and become a Pillar. Miu fends her off with the Camera Obscura and opens the box to find her mother inside. Miku wakes and, recognising Miu instantly, asks her forgiveness. The two return to the antiques shop and fall into a deep sleep.
A book in Miu's room reveals the meaning of "Shadowborn": a child born of a union between a living person and a ghost. In the Twelfth Drop, while Miku continues to sleep, Miu talks briefly to Yuri, who is heading to a hidden shrine at the very summit of the mountain. "If you leave," she says, "you won't be coming back. You're still not sure, are you? You're wondering if you should go or if you should stay."
In the final chapter, Miu dreams that she wakes alone and sees her mother leaving the shop. She follows her to the Twilit Peak. Miku's image is always a little way ahead of her, talking about her unhappy childhood and her feelings for her brother. Miu finally catches up with her in the Lake of the Departed. Miku explains that she always felt alone, and nobody but her brother understood her; when he died, all she wanted was to go back in time and be with him. Miu says that she has never had anyone to go into the afterlife with, but although she once hated Miku for leaving her, she understands now. Under the light of the Dark Sun, she begs Miku not to go, and Miku, smiling, agrees to stay.
At this point, there are two possible endings. In one ending, Miu calls her mother a liar, and says she always knew Miku was just a trace, and no longer belongs in this world. Miku fades away, leaving Miu in tears. In the second ending, Miku does not fade, and Miu wakes in the antiques shop to find Miku still sleeping beside her.

Voice Lens Quote
- "I can read other people's minds. It's dull... people's minds are boring. But then again, so is mine. I'm nothing. I have nothing... Mother...? Mother? Mother! Mother... Mother... Mother... Mother... Mother... Mother... Mother...?"
- ―Miu Hinasaki src
- "Mother... why did you go off on your own? Why...? Do I mean nothing at all to you? Whatever you left for... was it more important than me? Why didn't you take me with you? I can't... just wait... I need to do something... I HAVE to!"

- "I have a pretty smile, do I? Hmph. That's a terrible lie. The worst I've ever heard. My smile is horrible. Just seeing it makes me want to cry. I'm pretty used to people cheating me and telling me lies... But that lie hurts. It's a filthy lie. Never give me that horseshit again."
