Guardians (FF5)

The Guardians (Japanese: isame) are a group of five shrine maidens featured in Fatal Frame V. Unlike other maidens, they were never put into reliquaries, instead heading out into the water in order to purify it. Their role was to surround a casket to guard it. However, they came into contact with black water that overflowed from the failed ritual at the Shadowspring and turned into vengeful spirits, trying to drag others into the water with them. Many Guardians appear in the final battle with Ose Kurosawa, attempting to protect her from attacks.
During battles against multiple Guardians, they will sometimes join hands and encircle the player, chanting and gradually removing health. The circle can be broken by taking a shot of their linked hands. If you take too long to defeat a Guardian, more will appear.

- An image of five drowned Guardians was included with the European Limited Edition version of Fatal Frame V. The reverse of the photograph has an excerpt from Drenched Note, emphasising the parallels between the Guardians and Haruka's group of friends.
