Black water (夜泉, yomi, lit. "night spring") in Fatal Frame V is a malevolent force, similar to Malice, The Darkness and The Rift, which causes spirits to become corrupted and vengeful. Shrine maidens on Mount Hikami were sealed into boxes containing black water. When Ose Kurosawa's ritual failed, vast amounts of black water erupted from her box, engulfing the whole mountainside. In local folklore, black water was in direct opposition to Pure Water, feared by the locals as death and the Hidden World itself. A person who comes into contact with the water is considered tainted, a state in which the water erodes their bodies and gradually pulls the afflicted into the Hidden World.
