Unfathomable Forest Kanji 不知ノ森 Game Fatal Frame: Maiden of Black Water Located at Mount Hikami Function Forest Status Abandoned

The Unfathomable Forest (Shirazu no Mori) is a location in the central area of Mount Hikami in Fatal Frame V. The forest's name comes from a saying that says people who visit forget things as they walk, even where they're supposed to be going. The shrine path that runs through it was fixed up during the tourism era, but after a huge landslide parts of it collapsed, or turned into marshland. A cable car station is built next to the forest, connecting it to the rest of the mountain.

The Unfathomable Forest is the site where the majority of suicides on the mountain take place, and as such many items belonging to the dead are discovered there. Notable locations in the forest include:

• The Hanging Tree, a tree well known for having many people commit suicide by hanging themselves from it. Ropes still hang from its branches.
• The Shrine of Dolls, which bridges the river. Those wishing to climb higher up the mountain were once obliged to pass through the shrine or the Womb Cavern below.
• Keiji Watarai's lost house appears from time to time, somewhere on the edge of the forest.
• Casket Marsh, a large pool in the western part of the forest. It is the former site of the Hall of Fire, and the ruins of the old building can still be seen there occasionally.

Misc. Info

• Unused files for what appears to be an early version of the Unfathomable Forest and Shrine of Dolls were left in the game, and discovered in the remastered version in 2021. A video exploring the area can be viewed here.
