The Engraved Men were four members of the Moriya family, master Shrine Carpenters dedicated to the Kuze Shrine.
Before the Unleashing
The men in the Moriya family were permanently contracted to the service of the Kuze Shrine, and responsible for its upkeep. As Shrine Carpenters, they considered this a religious duty rather than just a job. Like the Men in White, they wear white robes and tall court hats as a mark of the religious significance of their work.
After the Unleashing
The four members of the Moriya Family were in charge of construction of the Rift Shrine and Shrine of Sleep after The Unleashing.
Once the construction was complete, the Engraved Men and Tengai Narumi slaughtered all the other Shrine Carpenters, either burying them alive or butchering them with hatchets, and placed them inside walls and pillars to prevent the spread of The Rift. The Engraved Men bear tattoos, possibly an effect of working in proximity to the Rift. Unlike the Men in White, many of whom tried to flee, the Engraved Men willingly gave their lives "for the Kuze Shrine," and were made into Sacrificial Pillars. Each formed a seal over the door to the Shrine Courtyard, strengthening the barrier against the Rift.
Fatal Frame III
In Hour VI of Fatal Frame III, Rei Kurosawa must find and defeat the four Engraved Men in order to break the seals. During this time, they are represented by white Kushimi Dolls on skewers at the four corners of the Spirit Tree Garden, which disappear as Rei breaks the seals one by one. In death, they still carry their hatchets and use them to attack.
- Shigeomi Moriya is located in the Hall with Tatami. He carries Moriya Tome 1, and drops Rei's special function "Flash".
- Nirei Moriya is located in the Stairs Hallway. According to the ghost list, he "went to close the door to the Chamber, but got tattooed". He carries Moriya Tome 2.
- Tatsumi Moriya is located in the Futon Room, where the Shrine Carpenters slept. Tatsumi is flanked by two Shrine Carpenters during the fight. He carries Moriya Tome 3.
- Inui Moriya is located in the Foyer, where he waited to ambush the Shrine Carpenters who tried to escape. He carries Moriya Tome 4.
The Engraved Men appear in the file photo Four Shadows and the "Sacrificial Pillars" projector reel.
